A Note from our President
In the opinion of those who decide these things, 1919 was the second most unremarkable year in U.S. history. Among the less than stirring events was the introduction of Prohibition, the Black Sox scandal, the League of Nations was formed, Walter Hagen won the Open and Connie Mack’s A’s limped along to a 34 and 104 record. (The Phillies don’t look so bad now.)
However, a most notable event did take place in Philadelphia. Several gentlemen of the Union League organized a golf society that would endure for over 95 years. Among the golf clubs involved were Merion, Philadelphia Cricket, and Philadelphia Country Club. Today the Fairway Club is comprised of members from over 30 of the finest golf clubs in the Philadelphia area, its suburbs, Bethlehem, PA., Lancaster, PA., and Wilmington, DE.
The club has remained active and vital through wars, the depression and recessions. Today we are able to enjoy the lasting results of the efforts of those few gentlemen. Our summer schedule of ten outings takes us to iconic venues such as Saucon Valley, Aronimink, Wilmington CC, and Lancaster CC. The ‘winter tour’ swings from coast to coast in Florida.
The roster of 36 members offers a pool for our trips to Ireland, Scotland and U.S. locales like Bandon Dunes. Our golf trip with Arnold Palmer at his Latrobe Country Club was made possible by our member, Howdy Giles.
The camaraderie and friendships formed through club membership have continued for many decades. We are closing in on our 100th anniversary. Our files contain a great deal of information to testify to the specialness of our club. This year we have instituted a program to capture our history and record our activities as they occur going forward.
This web site contains all our tournament results, individual scoring, membership, by-laws, advisories on course decorum, speed of play, etc. Perhaps most enjoyable are the scrapbook and gallery of pictures of our events, Christmas dinner dance and travels. This scrapbook and pictorial portfolio will capture our history for future members and the enjoyment of the good fortune of current members.
We have to thank Charles Kremp and his son Chad for the many hours dedicated to creating this site. This is a significant effort and brings the Fairway Club into the digital age. Thank you Charles.
George Connell, President
